PLAYING LEVEL

1 – Newcomer
You are new to tennis. Learn to make contact with the ball and get familiar with the rules and scoring.

2 – Beginner
You are working on consistently getting the ball over the net and into play, focusing on basic strokes.

3 – Beginner +
You can keep a rally going with slower-paced shots, although you may struggle with consistency in both groundstrokes and serves.

4 – Intermediate –
You can rally with some consistency using groundstrokes and volleys. You are beginning to understand positioning and footwork, and you can anticipate basic shots from your opponent.

5 – Intermediate
You handle serves, returns, groundstrokes and volleys reasonably well and focus on improving shot placement, strategy and your serving technique. You understand your strengths and weaknesses but struggle to make use of them.

6 – Intermediate +
You use a variety of shots effectively and are comfortable playing from the baseline, but sometimes struggle with positioning. You have started to assess and improve your ratio of unforced errors during matches. You may compete in local tournaments.

7 – Advanced
You understand all the strokes and continuously refine them, and you have a well-developed serve. Your defence is solid and you identify weaknesses to force errors, yet consistency throughout a full match is still a challenge. You may compete in higher-level tournaments in your region.

8 – Advanced +
You handle all aspects of the game effectively and consistently apply pressure. You take more risks, resulting in a balanced ratio of winners to unforced errors. You may compete in higher-level tournaments nationally.

9 – Semi-professional
You handle all shots in the game skilfully and consistently hit more winners than unforced errors in every match. You could play national competitions with good results.

10 – Professional
Congratulations! You compete at the highest level of your sport. Good luck in your professional career!
